Nobuta wo Produce stars Kame of KAT-TUN and Yamapi of NewS, and I think it is part of the reason those two bands have captured the attention of the English-speaking fangirl population. Or if it isn't the reason, it helps me to understand that phenomenon a tiny bit more, because phwoar, if Toma wasn't the JE love of my life, Kame totally would be.
Basically, Kame's character is Shuuji, the popular kid--funny, helpful, kind, hot girlfriend. Unfortunately, he is merely putting up a front so that he an have a "normal, care-free high school life." His perfect world is intruded upon in the first episode by
1) Yamapi's character, Akira. He is totally, hilariously eccentric. And also incredibly touchy-feely, with hugs and snuggling and kissy faces, mostly directed at Shuuji. He is totally convinced that he is Shuuji's soul mate bff and refuses to leave Shuuji alone.
2) Nobako, a shy and down-trodden girl who is the subject of dismally terrible amounts of bullying. Shuuji tries to deny that he desperately wants to help her, but he sort of spectacularly fails at hiding it. Especially from Akira.
So Akira suggests that they "produce" Nobuko (she quickly earns the nickname Nobuta, and pigs/buta feature prominently in the show), so that she becomes something that "everyone will want."
The thing that makes this show spectacular is that it utterly fails at keeping hold of cliches. It just spirals out of control, to the point where Nobuta never gets produced (actually, Shuuji loses his popularity, instead, kind of like Kare Kano in that respect) and the only thing that really seems to make sense any more is that Shuuji, Akira, and Nobuta have developed such a deeply bonded friendship that you sort of ache for them fondly and wish you and your friends were as heart-breakingly perfect together as they are.
Uh, so yeah, Aja has a pimp post here (http://bookshop.livejournal.com/770783.html), with some more specific reasons why the show kicks butt and also download links.
Moyashimon, from what I can tell from the two episodes I've watched, is about two country bumpkins, one the heir of a yeast factory and the other, a sake brewery, who are going to attend an agricultural college on the outskirts of Tokyo. They are kind of married. Also, the heir to the yeast factory sees microbes with his bare eyes.
...Yes, you just read that right. He sees MICROBES. AS KATAMARI-LIKE, ALIEN, CHIBI THINGS. And there are these two scientists at the college who are interested in him, one old guy who will, I guarantee, make you want to throw up within five minutes of being introduced, and his (uh, I think) research partner, a woman who dresses like she is an S&M madam instead of a scientist.
It's just, lots of crack. Lots and lots of crack that you can find on Youtube. Pimp post by Eck, which leads to a pimp post with download links, here (http://evercool.livejournal.com/282888.html).
