This is my mind. Run far, far away.

Jaida discussion topic has made me think about an old dream of mine from back in my puzzle-nerd days.

It's always wanted to use the Disney princesses to make one of those tic-tac-toe games where you have a 3x3 board of pictures and in each of the rows, columns and diagonals, the pictures have something in common. Except to make it the even nine you need to wait for the black princess or include Kiara (I like Kiara, so let's go with her). But it would go something like this:

"Mulan, Pocahontas, and Jasmine are ethnic minorities." "Snow White, Ariel, and Aurora are (human) princesses by birth." "Cinderella, Aurora, and Ariel have some trouble with their clothing at some point." "Jasmine, Ariel, and Kiara have overprotective parents." "Jasmine, Kiara, and Cinderella have (class-based) controversial relationships." "Pocahontas, Ariel, and Belle have (genetically) controversial relationships." "Snow White, Pocahontas, and Aurora must face the concept of death." "Snow White, Aurora, Jasmine all need rescuing by their princes." In contrast, "Mulan, Arial, and Pocahontas all (physically) rescue their princes." "True love plays an magical role in the stories of Aurora, Belle, and Snow White."

This game would be awesome. I could argue the specifics all day. In fact, I request to be argued with (please to not be paying attention to the mechanics of this sentence), as I think I messed up at least one of those generalizations.

(I am hiding from college right now, though I think the regressive topic should make that obvious.)

Have you been reading Ken Jenning's blog, or should I just continue to be amazed at the random coincidences that pop up in my reading material?

"Snow White, Aurora, Jasmine all need rescuing by their princes."

I seem to recall that all of the princesses needed rescuing at some point, much to my dismay. And the one who didn't (Mulan) decided she did not, in fact, want to be second-in-command of like, all China, but instead go home where she wouldn't be complete until a man came for her. ::sigh:: I really liked Mulan until the last five minutes. She deserved better.

(This also dovetails neatly into my rant about how you almost never get to play with the girls in Kingdom Hearts, and then only when playing with the "hero" would be utterly unfeasible.)

OMG, KEN JENNINGS AND I HAD A MIND-MELD MOMENT. AWESOMESAUCE. I never even knew he had a blog before now.

I seem to recall that all of the princesses needed rescuing at some point...

You're absolutely right. Belle is rescued from the wolves, which I forgot. Although I would argue that Kiara's rescue rather doesn't count, and that Prince Eric never "rescues" Ariel, more that they fight Ursula together in the end. And Cinderella is rescued by her mouse friends, not the prince. The prince is sort of an after effect, in my mind. When does Pocahontas need to be rescued?

Probably a better way to say it is that the princesses need rescuing in the climax of the movie.

I'm still ticked that the one who actually kills Ursula is Eric. He can't even breathe underwater!

Belle is also semi-rescued at the end of B&tB, what with Beast fighting off Gaston. (Belle supports by offering a comforting, womanly hand. Go Belle!) Kiara... I'll give you Kiara. She doesn't make up for Nala, who could pin Simba with regularity in her youth, needing Simba to take down Scar, though. (I suppose that's more of a monarchy problem, however.) Good call on Pocahantas, but since she and John Smith don't actually hook up, does it count? (I haven't seen the sequel; does she need rescuing in it?)

On the not-really-princesses list, Maid Marian, Megara, Wendy, Lady, Duchess, Bianca, Jane, and Kida all needed rescuing that I recall. I think Alice was mostly alright, but that may have been because her movie was a hallucination anyway.

So in conclusion: Yay lions and Native Americans and drugs! The rest of you, I hope you have a man somewhere in your life.

I'd rather say that technically Belle rescued the beast, what with the womanly hand and the healing powers of love.

For some reason, I forgot about Nala, who I suppose is like Cinderella in that she marries into royalty... Hm. My argument is that Nala is never a princess. She marries Simba when he's already the king. And this is sort of glossed over in the movie, but the lionesses must have conferred and agreed that Nala go find help, a task in which she succeeds spectacularly (with some help from Rafiki). She totally wears the metaphorical pants in that movie.

Dude! Kida is totally a princess! Marginalized Disney movies for the fail!

So in conclusion: Yay lions and Native Americans and drugs! The rest of you, I hope you have a man somewhere in your life.

My inner voice-over: "And that concludes How Arekuru Ruined My Innocent Childhood Memories, Part 132894."
